Which Newborn Essentials You Need To Add To Your Amazon Registry Right Now! Nathania, November 14, 2021May 16, 2024 These newborn essentials add up! Put them on your registry and get somebody else to pay for em. LOLPreparing for the arrival of a newborn can be an exciting and overwhelming time for new parents. There are countless products marketed as “essential” for newborns, but not all of them are necessary. To help navigate the sea of baby products, this blog post will cover the true essentials that I ACTUALLY used and recommend – and the ones I regretted splurging on.Disclaimer: Some of the links used here are affiliate links, which means I make a small commission for no additional cost to you. I used amazon even with less profit, because this seems to be the most convenient for you guys. Thanks so much for using Nathania Raye as a resource for finding the best registry items for YOU!Crib or BassinetFirst and foremost, a safe place for the baby to sleep is a top priority. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that newborns sleep in the same room as their parents, on a firm and flat surface like a crib or bassinet. I loved the crib we picked out for my sons nursery, but the bassinet we chose wasn’t the easiest to keep clean. It just wasn’t that functional. A friend of mine used this one for her son and she loved it. It’s important to choose a crib or bassinet that meets safety standards and does not have any loose parts or bedding that could pose a suffocation hazard. The mattress we got is soft on one side for infants and soft on the other for when our little became a toddler. Be sure to get a few fitted sheets and a waterproof mattress cover are necessary because – well, babies are messy as hell.ClothesOne thing about babies, they spit and vomit and poop outside their pampers… a lot. You need an abundance of clothes. If you do not have a washer/dryer unit in your home it’s okay to go a little overboard. You never know how big or small your baby will be at birth, so get newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 month outfits. You also may want to consider getting bigger sizes to prepare for any unforeseen issues you may run into with your mental health after giving birth. This is not to scare you, but to provide a bit of realism from someone who understands first hand.I got tons of clothes from amazon, carters, children’s place and second hand donations from friends/family with older kids. You’ll need onesies, hats, socks, and mittens so they don’t scratch their precious little face up. Sleepers, sleep sacks, and swaddlers are all great for helping them sleep comfortably. DO NOT put a blanket on your newborn while they sleep! William Fortunato: pexels.comDiapersDiapers are another essential item for newborns. Whether you choose disposable or cloth diapers, you’ll will need to have a good supply on hand. Newborns typically go through 8-12 diapers in a single day, so having a few packs of diapers or a stash of cloth diapers is necessary. I always used the pampers swaddlers for my son, and I loved it. Based on my own experience, I don’t recommend baby dry or cruisers. It is also important to have sensitive skin wipes and diaper rash cream on hand for easy diaper changes. Try to get the wipes with the pop top to avoid them from drying out prematurely. Diaper rash cream is all about personal preference, but I swear by aquaphor. It can be a little pricey, but it’ll be worth it when your babys bottom clears up in less than 24 hours. I recommend getting a cart that you can store your diaper changing supplies on and move around your house with you. If you have questions surrounding cloth diapering vs. disposable diapers, check out Kamil’s post on her blog, WifeyChat. She’s another black woman who shares her experiences and advice around marraige and motherhood. I don’t think a diaper genie is necessary, but if you have it in your budget, my friend used this one and says she liked it. I did not buy a diaper genie and I don’t lose sleep over it either. I always tossed poopie pampers in the big garbage bin outside my window. We bought a wipe warmer and I’m here to say, don’t even waste your money (or anyone else’s) on this. It isn’t worth it.William Fortunato: pexels.comFeeding SuppliesFeeding supplies are a whole other thing to consider for your newborn. Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, you’ll will need bottles, extra nipples, a breast pump, and storage bags. It’s also super helpful to have burp cloths and bibs on hand for messes.I used the avent bottles, extra nipples, warmer, and sterilizer. Loved them all and will definitely use them for any future child I may have. PLEASE be sure to get flow 1 for your newborn, to ensure they don’t receive milk too quickly and choke. I used the Spectra S2 Electric breast pump and thought it was fine. My insurance paid for it and it got the job done. The hands free Willow Pump was on my wishlist and if you have some extra cushion in your budget, I recommend it. Being able to go about your day while pumpng is such a game changer. Speaking of hands free pumping, these nursing bras helped me be able to at least not lose my mind while having to hold the pump to my breast for the length of every session. I got a size XL for my watermelons and wore one everyday for 6 months. The type of storage bags you buy really doesn’t matter. I used these and they were fine. Nursing pillows are not necessary, but they definitely are helpful to have. This is similar to the one I was gifted at my baby shower. Keep in mind that you can try different covers. They come off and wash easily. I had tons of fun with the burp cloths and bibs because there are sooooooo many cute designs. My sons dad had a running joke that everyday he’d come home from work and see out son in a new bib he’d never seen before. Sets like this and this are just too cute to not have in my opinion, LOL. I’ll admit some are cringy, but if there’a a pack of 6 and I hate 1, I’m still going to buy it. Burp cloths are a necessity. I recommend getting some cotton and some muslin ones just so you can try out both and decide on your preference. I liked the cotton ones, but loved the muslin feel. Bath Time ProductsBath time is a great bonding time for you and your newborn. To make bath time safe and comfortable, you’ll need a baby bathtub, sensitive baby soap, and washcloths with soft towels. I linked all the products that I used myself and enjoyed. Keep in mind that your baby might cry during bath time. My son hated all baths and diaper changes until he was big enough to kick in the water. He didn’t want to be naked, and hated the water touching him. Then all of a sudden he learned he could splash and became a fish at bathtime. Now he’s just indifferent.Transportation MethodsI’ll make this clear because I did not know this. You cannot leave the hospital with your newborn if they are not in a carseat. I’ll repeat, YOU NEED A CARSEAT TO TAKE YOUR BABY HOME. It doesn’t matter if you live around the corner from the hospital. A carseat is non-negotiable. You’re also going to need a stroller. I was gifted this one at my baby shower and loved it. It’s important to note that I didn’t take my son outside until he was about 6 months old, so I don’t know how compatible this is for fresh out the womb infants. This doona dupe was on my wishlist, but if you’re looking for a more affordable option check this carseat and this stroller out. When my son was a newborn I was teaching kindergarden remotely during the pandemic. I wasn’t really savy with tying him up in the DIY baby slings, but this carrier was quick and easy so I wore him in it almost everyday. When he wasn’t in that, he was in his swing or asleep in his crib. Check out my nursery essentials post for more info on those. Baby Bag with a Changing StationObviously you need a bag to carry your baby items around whenever you travel with them. ALWAYS keep a supply of extra diapers, wipes, ointments, clothes, and feeding necessities in your baby bag! You can also get a baby bag with a changing station built in. I didn’t even know this was a thing until I got two of them at my baby shower. The changing station part may feel extra, but I can promise it’s come in handy quite a few times for me. I didn’t take my son out often due to him being a pandemic baby, but on those rare occasions, I didn’t have to worry about laying his little body on any disgusting changing boards in any public bathrooms. All in AllPreparing for a newborn’s arrival can be overwhelming, but focusing on the true essentials can make the process less stressful.
