How to Survive the First Trimester of Pregnancy Nathania, September 19, 2021April 15, 2024 The first trimester of pregnancy is a major milestone in any woman’s life. It can be super friggin exciting, but overwhelming and full of unknowns. Here are some things every mom should know during their first trimester of pregnancy.Photo from Canva LibraryStart Prenatal Care Right AwaySchedule an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to start receiving regular check-ups and monitoring the baby’s growth and development. Buy prenatal vitamins and start taking them, yesterday. Do some research on obstetricians compared to midwives, and determine which option is better for you. While you’re at it, also look into whether you should hire a doula for extra support.Determine if You Need Assistance with Your Morning SicknessMorning sickness is a common symptom during the first trimester. For most women, it subsides in the second trimester. If Mother Nature has been beefing with you for no reason, like she was with me, you’ll be sick the whole time.Hopefully, Mama Nature is cool with you, though, because the consistent vomiting is just not a vibe. Ginger candies and chewing gum helped me a ton.I had hyperemesis, so I was also on a medication that helped me tremendously. If you find yourself being unable to make it through on a day-to-day basis, talk with your provider about what options you have. Be Prepared for Weird Physical ChangesI’m gonna be honest with you, love. The changes pregnancy causes your body to experience are ghetto. My nipples turned black. Yup, you read that right. Huge, black nipples… Like, HUH?And that’s just one of the many changes I went through in the first couple of months. Check out this symptom list to see other physical changes you may experience in the first trimester. Nurture Your Body AppropriatelyYour baby will take what it needs from you, regardless of what you’ve got going on! That means eat your veggies, take your vitamins, and drink your water, or you’ll be walking around looking like a watermelon belly crackhead with brown teeth. No, but for real, that baby can suck all the calcium out of your teeth if you let it… SHEESH.Image from Canva Photo LibraryExerciseConsult with your healthcare provider to determine a safe and appropriate exercise routine.I’m definitely being hypocritical about even putting this on the list because the only exercise I did while pregnant was walking up the stairs to my OBGYN’s office, but do as I say and not as I do. LOLLearn About Fetal DevelopmentThe fetus develops pretty fast during the first trimester. By the end, it has all major organs and body systems.Imagine the little peanut you see on your first ultrasound growing into an actual being with a heart, lungs, and fingernails. Isn’t that so cool? You can track all of this using this app. I remember being so excited to check the updates every Sunday when I was pregnant with my son.Ask About Genetic TestingTypically, this happens in the second trimester, but your healthcare provider may offer genetic testing during the first trimester. This can help identify potential genetic disorders and help with planning for the baby’s care after birth if something does come up.Start Establishing Your VillagePregnancy can be an emotional rollercoaster. Having a support system, like a partner, family, or friends, can provide the emotional support you need during this time.If you don’t have that, you can always send me a direct message on Instagram! I love connecting with you mamas and have been fortunate enough to join the villages of a few supporters in the past. It is truly an honor.Rest and RelaxationListen to your body. If you need to relax and take things easy, do just that. Taking care of yourself is taking care of the life you’re growing. Kick back and enjoy the ride, soon enough your shoes won’t fit anyway.
